Before you order
That comes down to how they are washed. Fabric softener and dryer sheets coat cotton loops. It feels nice for a week, then the towel turns stiff and starts pushing water around instead of soaking it up. Wash warm, skip the softener, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse now and then, and tumble dry low. Cared for like that, 100% cotton terry stays soft.
Any new cotton terry lets go of some loose fibers at first. Wash your set before the first use, on its own with no fabric softener, and give it two or three washes. Most of the shedding is gone after that. Patting dry instead of rubbing helps in the first week too.
A musty smell comes from a towel that stays damp. Hang yours spread open, not folded over a hook, and wash it every three or four uses. If a towel ever smells off, run it hot with a cup of white vinegar and no detergent, then wash it again as normal.
